Incubator director nominated for top award
Richmond, Va. – The Greater Richmond Technology Council (GRTC) has announced that David R. Lohr, executive director of the Virginia Biosciences Development Center, is a finalist for the 2007 IBM Leadership Award.
The GRTC annually recognizes corporate and community leaders, entrepreneurs, technology pioneers and outstanding individuals in specific award categories and highlights their achievements, which are vital to the growth of the region’s tech economy. This year, Lohr has been selected as a finalist for the IBM Leadership Award, which recognizes individual leadership that has served as a catalyst for positive technology-related initiatives in central Virginia.
Lohr serves as the Director of Business Development for the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park (VBRP) where he works with start-up and early-stage companies in the Virginia Biotechnology Center, assisting them with business planning and strategies, including accessing capital, marketing and general business consultation. Lohr also serves as Executive Director and Treasurer of the Virginia Biosciences Development Center (VBDC), a non-profit business incubator created by the VBRP to deliver business assistance to the Park’s incubator companies.
Since opening in 1995, 63 companies have started in the Park’s incubator facility, 19 from VCU and 44 that were attracted from outside locations. In 11 years, the incubator program has successfully graduated 31 companies – three of which are now publicly traded – and has helped to raise more than $155 million in federal and equity funding for its tenants.
The winner of the IBM Leadership Award will be announced at the annual Technology Awards Gala on Wednesday, May 9, 2007, 5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m., at the Richmond (Va.) Marriott.
