Governor announces new
Biotech Partnership board members
Richmond, Va. – Gov. Tim Kaine recently announced the appointment of Cheryl A. Moore and the reappointment of James E. Sheffield to the Virginia Biotechnology Research Partnership Authority board of directors.
The authority board is a political subdivision of the commonwealth of Virginia and has been the vehicle for developing the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park.
Sheffield was first appointed to the BioTech Park’s corporation board in 2000 for a three-year term. In 2003, he was appointed to the authority board by Gov. Mark Warner and will serve an additional three-year term. Sheffield currently practices law in Richmond, Va.
“Mr. Sheffield has been instrumental in helping us develop a successful biotechnology park in Richmond and we are excited to have him on the authority board for another three years,” commented Robert T. Skunda, president and CEO of the Park.
According to Skunda, as chief operating officer for Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Farm Research Campus in Loudon County, Moore also will be a strong addition to the board.
“Ms. Moore has extensive experience in the life sciences industry and represents a major component of the state’s bioscience development initiatives. Her involvement on this board will help us with our mission of creating a stronger and more competitive industry cluster in Virginia.”
Prior to joining HHMI in March 2004, Moore was senior vice president and chief operating officer at the Burnham Institute, a private $60 million nonprofit basic biomedical research institute focusing on cancer and neurological disorders in La Jolla, Calif.
About the Park:
Situated on 34 acres adjacent to VCU’s medical campus, the Park is currently home to a unique mix of more than 55 technology companies, research institutes affiliated with the VCU Medical Center, major state and national medical laboratories. After completion of the new $350 million Philip Morris USA Center for Research and Technology, the Park will encompass 1.2 million square feet of space in nine buildings and employ more than 2,000 industry professionals.
