Forensics Institute awarded for training program

Richmond, Va. – The Virginia Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine (VIFSM) was recently presented the 2006 Associations Advance America Award of Excellence in Public Policy, a national awards competition sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), in Washington, D.C.

The award was given to the Institute for its DNA Technology Prosecutors Training Program, which was developed to help prosecutors and other law enforcement officials efficiently and effectively use forensic DNA typing technologies.

DNA evidence has become a critical tool in the investigation and prosecution of crime in the U.S. In addition to its use in identifying perpetrators and exonerating suspects, jurisdictions also are expanding the types of crimes in which they seek DNA evidence.   The challenge for law enforcement officials is that the technology involved in forensic DNA typing evolves on a continual basis, making ongoing training essential.

“We are honored to be recognized for the role we play in helping the commonwealth’s prosecutors take advantage of emerging DNA technologies,” commented Linda Carne, executive director of the Institute.

In a letter to the VIFSM, John H. Graham, ASAE president and CEO, stated that “Your educational program is a perfect example of how VIFSM plays a vital role in helping the nation adapt to complex and changing times. Contributions such as yours are vital and add real value to society.”

Now in its 16th year, the Associations Advance America Awards Program is a national awards competition that recognizes institutions and associations that propel America forward — with innovative projects in education, skills training, standards-setting, business and social innovation, knowledge creation, citizenship and community service.
