Park tenant introduces its product
at E-Learning conference
Richmond, Va. - The Electric Book Company formally introduced
its technical publishing technology at the recent E-Learn
2004 Conference in Washington, D.C.
The Trivium™ Framework for Distance Learning is an
electronic publishing technology designed to support collaborative
discussion of documents rich in mathematics, chemical notation,
schematics and other technical illustrations.
“Current distance learning technology for science,
math and engineering is rooted in 1980s technology,” according
to Electric Book Company President Kenneth Feldt. “This
is particularly true when it comes to the design of instructional
content — content that is rich in non-textual material. … It’s
time to accept that online instructional content must grow
beyond the simply viewed web page — and must now serve as
the basis for online dialogue.”
The Trivium™ Framework includes a document-preparation
technique that allows collaborators to include references
to graphic elements, portions of formulae and text passages
for display in asynchronous messages such as electronic mail
and discussion forums. The technology is built upon the next
generation of web standards such as MathML (mathematics),
CML (chemistry) and SVG (interactive graphics).
“This technology will be of great assistance to students
and educators as well as in various technical industries,” said
David Lohr, director of business development at the Virginia
BioTechnology Research Park and executive director of the
Park’s business accelerator, the Virginia Biosciences
Development Center. “Mathematic formulae, graphs, tables
or text can be exchanged with other members of the ‘E-learning
community,’ in an easy to read format.”
The Electric Book Company, headquartered at the Virginia
BioTechnology Research Park, works with postsecondary educational
institutions, private industry and nonprofit institutes to
apply its technology in improving the effectiveness of online
content used in distance learning or other collaborative
settings (http://www.electricbook.net).
