TYSON’S CORNER, Va. – The Virginia BioTechnology Research Park recently participated in the annual Virginia Biotechnology Summit, held at the McLean Hilton Hotel.

More than 475 scientists, entrepreneurs, economic developers and industry professionals participated in the three-day event and over 50 companies displayed exhibits — making it one of the most successful conferences hosted by the Virginia Biotechnology Association.

“As the biotechnology industry expands, it is becoming the focal point of many local, regional and state economic development strategies,” said Robert Skunda, president and CEO of the BioTech Park. “The growth and success of this conference reflects the progress Virginia has made in capturing a portion of this fast-growing sector of the U.S. economy.”

During one of the informational sessions, Skunda lead a panel of government and industry professionals in discussing biotechnology in the United States and how Virginia can achieve its economic development goals and objectives in the industry. Panelists included Marianne Clark of the Battelle Memorial Institute, the Honorable Michael Schewel, secretary of commerce and trade for the Commonwealth of Virginia, Paul Romness of Amgen, and Herman Diebler of Scheer Partners.

David Lohr, executive director of business development at the BioTech Park, moderated the state’s annual Biosciences Investor's Conference, one of the summit highlights. Four companies, including Trident Pharmaceuticals, presented their business plans to an all-star panel of bioscience-focused venture capitalists and strategic investors. Trident Pharmaceuticals is a life science company based in the BioTech Park’s incubator facility that produces therapies designed to reduce addicts' dependencies on drugs and alcohol.
