VBDC executive director leads incubation
workshop
at international conference
RICHMOND, Va. – David Lohr, executive director of the
Virginia Biosciences Development Center (VBDC), led an eight-hour
pre-conference institute focused on the fundamentals of starting
and running a successful bioscience incubator today at the
National Business Incubation Association’s 18th annual
international conference in Atlanta.
“Globally, interest remains very high for starting
new bioscience-related incubation programs,” said Lohr.
“The VBDC is honored to be recognized by NBIA with this
invitation to use our incubation program as a model for instructing
new bioscience incubator developers in the field.”
Lohr and Robert Calcaterra, CEO and president of the Nidus
Center for Scientific Enterprise, reviewed several critical
issues in bioscience incubation including tenant selection,
advisory boards, regulatory and reimbursement issues, and
intellectual property.
The VBDC, located at the Virginia BioTechnology Research
Park, provides business assistance to start-up companies located
in the Park’s incubator facility. In less than three
years, the VBDC has emerged as a major contributor to the
growth of early-stage life science technology businesses in
the Richmond area. VBDC staff have counseled more than 23
start-ups and helped to launch eight of them. Since its inception,
VBDC has secured cash and/or in-kind commitments, grants and
contracts exceeding $750,000 for the benefit of growing the
life sciences industry in the region.
