VBDC client company nominated for
top Richmond award
RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Bioscience Development
Center (VBDC) announced today that for the second year in
a row client company kSERO Corp. has been selected by the
Greater Richmond Technology Council as a finalist for one
of Greater Richmond’s top awards.
The company was chosen as a finalist for the Live Oak Holdings,
L.C. Community Support Award, which is given by the council
to honor a technology-based organization whose efforts —
beyond the normal course of business — have enhanced
access to and use of technology in the Greater Richmond area.
kSERO is a life sciences company that develops a full line
of products and programs to address learning needs. The company
was launched in 2002 by Susan Hardwicke, Ph.D., president
and CEO, and Donald Abraham, Ph.D., professor of medicinal
chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University and director
of VCU’s Institute for Structural Biology and Drug Discovery.
Winners will be announced May 12 at the council’s
ninth annual Technology Stars Awards Gala. The awards gala
is expected to attract approximately 700 individuals, corporate
and community leaders, entrepreneurs and pioneers in the Greater
Richmond region.
The VBDC, located at the Virginia BioTechnology Research
Park, provides business assistance to start-up companies located
in the Park’s incubator facility. In less than three
years, the VBDC has emerged as a major contributor to the
growth of early stage life science technology businesses in
the Richmond area. VBDC staff have counseled more than 23
start-ups and helped to launch eight of them. Since its inception,
VBDC has secured cash and/or in-kind commitments, grants and
contracts exceeding $750,000 for the benefit of growing the
life sciences industry in the region.
