Anniversary celebration held to commemorate discovery of DNA

|
The Virginia BioTechnology Research Park was among the sponsors of a special reception at the Science Museum of Virginia celebrating the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the DNA double helix. The centerpiece of the event was a traveling exhibition on loan from the British Council that is on display through the month of August. The exhibition is part of international anniversary celebrations that mark the 1953 publication in the journal Nature of a paper by Francis Crick, a British scientist, and James Watson, an American biologist, concerning the molecular structure of DNA, the chemical substance found in the nucleus of every living cell. The exhibition includes a large three-dimensional model of DNA, computer interaction accessed through the United Kingdom Culture Laboratory web site and a seven-minute film on the history of DNA and developments in biotechnology. In addition to the BioTech Park, co-sponsors of the event were the Science Museum of Virginia, the British Embassy, the Virginia Biotechnology Association and IBM Life Sciences.
