BioTech Two
BioTech Two is the real-life home of Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the internationally recognized chief medical examiner and crime-solver created by noted author, Patricia Cornwell. The 137,000-square-foot, $31 million, state-of-the-art facility was completed by the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park in May 1998 to house the Virginia Department of Forensic Science and the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The building, which is leased to the commonwealth of Virginia under a long-term arrangement, also houses the new Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine. Virginia was the first state to use DNA evidence in criminal prosecution and maintains the largest DNA database of any state. Since Virginia developed its DNA database of convicted felons, the state has recorded more “cold hits” than any other state, helping to solve crimes that previously went unsolved.
