Many biosciences companies are small, privately held entities
with strong ties to the founders, who often have little business
experience.
The Virginia Biosciences Development Center, in affiliation
with Virginia Commonwealth University, is committed to providing
enlightening and challenging educational programs that prepare
the Park's entrepreneurs for the major challenges that confront
start-up and early-stage bioscience companies.
Among the programs is a monthly “Brown
Bag” Luncheon Seminar Series that features different
experts on everything from accounting to intellectual property.
The VBDC and VCU have developed the BioBiz
Internship program, which places graduate level business
students in the Park's early stage companies to help with
critical business issues.
In addition, the VBDC has teamed with VCU to develop a curriculum
to teach business skills to professional life scientists.
The VCU
Certificate Program in Life Sciences Entrepreneurship
will combine academic study, on-the-job training and professional
mentoring. A pilot program launches in January 2004.
