The Virginia BioTechnology Research Park is a dynamic biosciences community strategically headquartered in downtown Richmond, Va., in the heart of the nation’s East Coast pharmaceutical and biotechnology corridor, just 100 miles south of Washington, D.C. and its federal regulatory agencies.
Originally created as a partnership of Virginia Commonwealth
University, the city of Richmond and the commonwealth of
Virginia, the Park is home to a unique mix of more than
50 biosciences
companies, research institutes affiliated with the VCU Medical
Center and major state and national medical laboratories
and organizations involved with forensics, testing of biotoxins
and management of the nation’s organ transplantation
process.
The Park works hand-in-hand with VCU, other academic institutions,
business, government and not-for-profit organizations to
facilitate
technology transfer and business development. Its business
accelerator —
the Virginia Biosciences
Development Center — assists biosciences startups
in the Park’s incubator with everything from legal
and financial services to business planning.
Since the completion of the new Philip Morris Research and Technology Center,
the Park is now two-thirds developed. With more than 1.2 million square
feet of space in nine buildings, the Park now employs more than 2,000
scientists, researchers, engineers and technicians in fields that include
drug development, medical diagnostics, biomedical engineering, forensics
and environmental analysis.

The Virginia BioTechnology Research Park is a vibrant and visible sign of a dramatic downtown revitalization underway in Richmond that also includes a new convention center, Canal Walk, VCU expansion on both of its campuses and a new performing arts complex.
But the Park isn’t limited to its 34-acre downtown campus. Partnerships with neighboring Henrico and Chesterfield counties extend the reach of the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park to satellite parks that can accommodate larger companies on suburban campuses in the Greater Richmond area.
